Public Studio Project: Wings, Weavings and Worms by Elsabe Dixon
"Wings, Weavings and Worms" is an audience interactive sculptural environment in which the audience creates the structures and engages in an agricultural practice of sericulture to make the work in a public space. The environment gradually “grows” from armature forms and repurposed materials in the Public Studio Project space at the Anacostia Arts Center for the duration of LUMEN8ANACOSTIA 2013, from the opening day on June 22 through August 10, 2013. Live silk worms spin on a sculptural armature built by the artist and audience. These worms spin cocoons, which hatch at the end of the show in a grand finale of fluttering white moths. Collected cicada wings accumulate in an installation on the gallery walls to create an added insect element.
